Abstract

Hinduism teaches about avatara, namely the descent of the divine to the worldly realm and mingling with human life. This teaching is considered to have originated from the Purusha Sukta of the Rg Veda and then developed in the Itihasa and Puranas. This study focuses on the Mahabharata text that influences the religious life of Hindus in Indonesia, especially in Bali. The entry of transnational teachings known as sampradaya caused unrest and conflict in Hindu society, especially in Bali. One of the debates is the worship of Krsna as God which is considered to deviate from Hindu teachings in general which regard Krsna as an avatar of Visnu. This study aims to analyze the concept of avatara contained in the Mahabharata text, its origin, character, and role in upholding dharma (truth). The theory used is the theory of Semiotics, and the theory of Hermeneutics. Types and research data using qualitative data. Primary data sources are Mahabharata manuscripts and secondary data sources include research results, books, and internet sources. The research instrument uses a dictionary as a translation medium. At the stage of presenting data analysis using formal and informal methods, it was found that the avatara concept originated from Purusa Sukta which was sourced from the Rg Veda and then developed in the Mahabharata. Mahabharata describes avataras that appear every age and avataras with special missions. Krsna is described as having two characters as a divine being free from the influence of the world with all its rules and as an ordinary human being bound by this world.

Abstract

The teachings of Śiwa who dominate and are recognized as a majority and even animates most of the Hindu values in Bali do not forget to accommodate and harmonize themselves with other teachings, one of which is the Buddhist. From this, the existence of Buddhist teachings is still developing today. The reflection of the unification of the value of Śiwa-Buddha's teachings, one of which can be found at the Pura Pegulingan in Manukaya Village. The manifestation of the Śiwa-Buddha syncretism in the Pegulungan Temple is the Pajenengan Temple. Pajenengan's Pelinggih itself is a Pelinggih in the form of a Buddhist stupa which is worshiped jointly by Hindus and Buddhists who are the patrons of the temple. The influence of Buddhism in the Tampaksiring and Pejeng areas was inseparable from the policies of Masula Masuli in Bali in the śaka year 1100 (1178 AD). In particular, this study aims to analyze the Pelinggih Pajenengan as a form of Śiwa -Buddha syncretism at Pegulungan Temple. In particular, this study aims to analyze the Pelinggih Pajenengan as a form of Śiwa-Buddha syncretism at Pegulingan Temple. This research is qualitative research with a theological approach, while the data collection techniques used include observation, interviews, literature study, and document study. This research is qualitative research with a theological approach. The results of this study are very important because it shows the intense Pelinggih as a form of syncretism Śiwa-Buddha. Pelinggih Pajenengan was also called Padma Asta Dala in a Buddhist statue of gold with a standing attitude or Tribangga with the attitude of the waramudra hands. Thus, the existence of Pelinggih Pajenengan which contains the patterns of Śiwa and Buddha. The discovery of relief of stupa and lingga-yoni is proof that the unification of the two different teachings is very possible and as a unifying medium for Hindus and also Buddhism in the Pegulingan temple. In addition, the mantra addressed to Śiwa Raditya was also spoken by Śiwa-Buddha Raditya, this proves that the teachings of Śiwa-Buddha have been integrated in the Pegulingan temple.

Abstract

Conducting cremation ceremony (ngaben) with conventional options as well as in the crematorium essentially requires costs in procuring various ceremonial supplies. Conventional cremation takes a lot of time, cost, and effort which is considered heavy, but it contains a lot of local wisdom values in each process. Meanwhile, crematoriums are considered effective, practical, and efficient in accordance with the needs of society in the midst of social problems and heterogeneous work that demands the various interests it has. However, the commodification system in the crematorium will degrade the local wisdom of the process of menyamabraya, nguopin, and learning about upakara ngaben that can naturally be formed in society. Through cross-subsidies with ceremonial management mechanisms, the two aspects are actually well bridged. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of cross-subsidies in the management of beneficiation ceremonies in Penyaringan village. This research uses qualitative methods with a phenomenological approach, to obtain data, it begins with determining the location, determining informants, collecting data, analyzing data, and is presented in a qualitative descriptive form. From the results of the study ceremonial management technically regulates the implementation of ceremonies that adopt modern management that regulates aspects of time and energy, while cross-subsidies have an impact on the provision of economic capital through the use of patus and peson-peson upakara. With this pattern, everyone who dies conducting cremation ceremony simply without having to be constrained in terms of his financing. Through ceremonial management, the values of local wisdom can still be maintained without having to put aside technological developments as a form of progress of the times.

Abstract

Air Sanih community underwent changes after being developed into a tourism destination. The sacred pool (pertirtan), converted into a paid tourist attraction. Changing the sacred pool into a paid pool is done for material gain. The emergence of GoMas (Goa Maria Air Sanih) has had an impact on religious practices. A number of members of the Air Sanih community turned away, making the Virgin Mary their god of worship. This study aims to determine the dialectic, deviation, and religious conversion of the Air Sanih community, through qualitative methods through primary and secondary data sources, namely information from the Air Sanih community and supporting literature data through a phenomenological approach. The results of the study explain dialectics as the impact of developing a village into a tourism destination. The entry of tourism provides new understanding and experience to the people of Air Sanih. A new understanding in the field of religious patterns has made people turn to certain religious patterns, namely making the Blessed Virgin Mary a Ista Dewata (eight existence of God), a deity to worship. This is done by a number of Hindus who have a tradition of using a prayer facility in the form of a daksina linggih (Balinese offering which function as a God’s chair/seat) in front of the statue of the Virgin Mary. Indirectly making the Virgin Mary a worshiped God, without leaving Ida Sang Hyang Widhi as the initial worshiping God, is an internal religious conversion.

Abstract

Pura Dalem Betawi is located in Banjar Jumpayah, Mengwitani Village, Mengwi Subdistrict, Badung Regency, Bali Province, belonging to the concept of siwa-buddha. The uniqueness of Pura Dalem Betawi is the palinggih Gedong Buddha Dewi Kwan Im, and its piodalan coincides with Chinese New Year. The community as the temple caretakers call it Chinese New Year piodalan. Intercultural interaction occurs at Pura Dalem Betawi, because the Chinese New Year piodalan is attended by Chinese people. The purpose of this research emphasizes the context of intercultural communication, namely to bridge the process of community interaction in ethnic, religious and racial differences, so that social conflict does not arise. The research used a qualitative-interpretative approach with the intention of exploring information that describes the existence of the research location, based on community experience and describing it in scientific work. Determination of informants using purposive sampling technique, with the consideration that the informants know and understand the research topic, such as: pemangku, pengempon temple, religious leaders, and temple pengayah from Chinese residents. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman model, resulting in a picture that intercultural communication has a very important role in the process of social interaction in Pura Dalem Betawi. The intercultural communication approaches applied are: social psychological, intercreative, and cultural dialogic approaches. Humans develop understanding through their mindset, and gain new knowledge through interaction so that they can interpret it to form perceptions. The intercultural communication approach is combined with the concept of menyamabraya that has been inherent in Balinese life. Menyamabraya is ideal, because it views all humans as brothers, so menyamabraya is applied in intercultural interactions at Pura Dalem Betawi when ngayah prepares for the Chinese New Year piodalan. Cultural acculturation in Pura Dalem Betawi runs harmoniously and in line with religious moderation, because it has the same goal in maintaining harmony.

Abstract

The protection of medical personnel in armed conflict is often neglected. All countries in the world must pay attention to this by establishing international humanitarian law. Protection policies for medical personnel in war should reflect the values of past religious teachings, one of which is in the Hindu books Arthasastra and Bharatayuda, some of which reflect humanitarian missions. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the concept of protection for medical personnel in situations of armed conflict in international humanitarian law policy and to analyze the virtues in the Book of Arthasasta and the Bharatayuda war epic. The method uses normative research with a legal and historical regulatory approach which is analyzed descriptively. The research results show that the role of medical personnel in armed conflict situations is very important, guided by international charters. In the Hindu Law Book Arthasasta states that the protection of medical personnel in conflict situations is the responsibility of the king or policy maker to provide a safe place, so that they can carry out their duties well. In the Bharatayuda epic, it is also told that Nakula and Sahadeva were protected by enemy troops to provide treatment to the injured Karna. The values contained in the teachings of Hinduism are one of the philosophies of protection for medical personnel in the current situation of armed conflict. These values are then championed in international humanitarian law policies regarding the importance of protecting the weak and those who carry out humanitarian missions.
